A Gentle Breath Pause for Busy Days

A simple breath-awareness practice you can return to anywhere, in just a few minutes.

Busy days rarely leave room for a full practice. But even a few minutes of breath awareness can be a way of returning to yourself.

The practice

  1. Sit comfortably, with your spine upright but not stiff. Let your hands rest.
  2. Close your eyes, or soften your gaze towards the floor.
  3. Simply notice the breath as it is. Do not try to change it.
  4. Feel where you notice the breath most clearly — the nostrils, the chest, the belly.
  5. When the mind wanders, gently bring it back. Wandering is normal; returning is the practice.
  6. After a few minutes, take one slightly fuller breath, open your eyes and pause before moving on.

A few reminders

  • There is no right or wrong experience. Some days you may feel calm; other days restless.
  • Keep the breath natural and comfortable. Never force or hold the breath in this practice.
  • If you feel dizzy or uncomfortable at any point, stop and breathe normally.

This is an awareness practice, not a treatment. If you have a medical condition affecting your breathing, please speak with your doctor about what is suitable for you.

Over time, this small pause can become a familiar place to come back to — a reminder that stillness is always available, even on the busiest of days.
